Spring Fashion File – Celebrity stylist, host of the Style Network’s “How Do I Look?” and Yoplait Light Two Week Tune Up spokesperson, Jeannie Mai gives you the rundown on how to spring forward this season.
Take the opportunity to do a little spring cleaning
You can freshen up your wardrobe by adding a few new pieces that follow spring trends, and wearing them with basics and staples like a great pair of jeans. Freshening up can also mean a quick tune up if you’re feeling a little weighed down from the winter months. I love the Yoplait Light Two Week Tune Up plan – it’s simple and is a quick way to lose 5 pounds in 2 weeks to look and feel your best.
Trends for your tresses – what’s hot for hair
I give a short nod to the pixie’s bad-ass cousin, the bob. Say goodbye to the topknot as buns go low. Try something serious with a more severe side part.
From an off-to-the-side swoop to thick, Jane Birkin-esque ’70s fringe, bangs are SO back!
Jeannie’s favorite: The low bun. Straight from Guido Palau, who created the look for Nina Ricci’s spring show, he recommends starting with a center part. Next, pull hair into a low ponytail, making sure to cover the ears. Then twist the ponytail into a loose knot. Remember, a too-tight style will look overly austere, so keep it loose for a touch of bohemian flair!
Must-haves for makeup
DYING over the new makeup trends set for the spring/summer 2011 season! They’re absolutely fabulous if you wish to look dazzling with the gorgeous pastel eye makeup trend that’s so perfect for the warm season!
You’ve probably seen the outbreak of Peacock collections that MAC and Shu Uemura both have launched this season so it is no wonder that color is totally in. Experiment by adding one different color shadow to your look for the day, you don’t have to look like a peacock going to work, right? Unless that’s what you were aiming for.
Nude has always been pretty much in but this season, try going for bolder lips like fuscia, red, or hot pink. I love taking a powerful lipstick and then lightly dab the color onto my lips so it leaves a semi-stain, just bitten look. Take a tip from Fendi’s Spring 2011 collection, featuring a matte bright orange. Bright lips are in babe so pucker up!
What to put in your wardrobe
The explosion of color is instant “wear”apy to any soul.
Spring 2011′s floral trend sees pieces set to brighten up wardrobes in bright botanicals, oriental blooms and ditsy prints. Clash them to make a statement.
It’s time to wake up and smell the roses, guys and gals…..and the poppies and the lilies and the peonies too. Bold flower-power prints are hot off the runways from designers such as Jil Sander, Erdem, Jaeger, Kenzo, Vivienne Westwood, Mui Mui, Dries Van Noten and Antonia Marras.
Think palazzo pants, sheer blouses, or handbags and shoes, these botanical beauties are here to brighten up our spring and summer.
Feminine prints are rediscovered on another one of Mai faves, floaty maxi dresses.
For a true designer look, make a statement by clashing big blooms with other florals, in different textures too.
All about accessories
If I had to pick one stand out musty that will be mine for the season, it’s the belt purse. There are the years when a particular style of clutch is on trend, and then there’s 2011. It’s out with the clutch and in with a belted alternative. It’ll be this year’s casual fashion trends, the belt purse is a statement piece of daytime wear that quickly went from the catwalks of Hermes and Pucci to the streets.
Fall fashion trends – Jeannie Mai provides her report from New York Fashion Week and how to gear up for this fall
Hot looks on the catwalk – what overall trends to look forward to this fall
I’ll forgive you if your first thought is “military is back… again?”. Yes, military remains a trend for Autumn / Fall 2010 but not as it did last year. Following on from Spring 2010, the women’s military trend turns away from the pomp of military inspired clothing we’ve become accustomed to Colombia Soccer Jersey, and takes its cues from 20th Century military uniforms. From army green to shearling lined boots, (slow down, Uggs), it’s now a trend that’s far more subtle but no less appealing.
Also haute is the sophisticated 70’s. By day it’s all about high waists, wide legs, soft blouses and ’70s accessories. By night, all that shimmers is gold. Flowing, draping dresses in high-shine fabrics or metallic hues are perfect for evening ’70s glamour. Be bold and don’t hold back, (have I ever??), this look is about balancing softness with boldness.
What will we see by way of prints and colors?
White’s gonna be a nice fresh, bright change—when it comes to tights! Whether you wear them vintage-style with a minidress and bold colors, or all light hues like a fairytale snow queen, there are various looks you’ll see glide off the runways.
Then there’s the camel coat, which didn’t make a strong appearance on the streets until late Winter 2010. It’s going to be THE alternative to the classic trench in 2010.
Next up was only a Hugh Hef musty, but we all may be fans this fall. Velvet is coming strong in four major styles, from the grungette girl to the classically elegant starlet, the vintage-inspired whimsical coquette to the masculine-as-feminine velvet clad Dandy. Colors are rich, and it can work for everything from pants to dresses, handbags to hats. Die!
Can I get a head-start?
Regardless of trends, every woman should have a go-to dress in their closet that they feel great in and flatters their body. You can get this any time of the year and mix in the latest trends.
Looking great is all about feeling great – for a quick tune-up, try something like the Yoplait Light Two Week Tune Up plan. You could lose 5 pounds in 2 weeks to give you that extra boost of confidence.
No matter what you’re wearing, stand tall… smile… and have fun. You’ll feel better and your confidence will shine through!
What about my hair and makeup this fall?
For fall 2011-12 women are powerful, sassy, assertive and tough and have been stomping down the catwalks at Alexander Wang, DKNY, and Marc Jacobs.
Accordingly, we’ve seen ponytails a-plenty and laissez-faire knots to demonstrate the fast-paced life that powerful women lead – this is as much time as we will spend on her hair, but we still looks sexy in the process.
When it comes to makeup, I have good news. Add 15 more minutes to your regime by putting away the tweezers! Thick, well-defined eyebrows represent the great novelty that made a strong come back for fall/winter 2010-2011. Prada, Narciso Rodriguez, and Alberta Ferretti are just a few that accentuated the eyebrows.
As for eyes, I’m all about the more vivid colors for the eye shadows such as orange or coral that graced the runways at Yves Saint Laurent or Christian Dior. Gorgeous.
