Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs thin you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs from local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Vacation” by Beach Fossils from the 2010 album Beach Fossils on Captured Tracks.

Beach Fossils – Vacation (MP3)

Coming to us from Brooklyn, drawing influence from Stereolab and classical music, is the lo-fi styling of Beach Fossils. Today’s song of the day features a drifting, carefree attitude, much like all the song titles on their self-titled debut, which without a doubt evokes feelings of literal laziness and summertime repose.

It all starts with Dustin Payseur composing and developing tracks in his tiny Brooklyn apartment in the fall of 2009, experimenting and innovating, creating tracks on his own until he joined with the members of his live band. Their chemistry and unforgettable stage presence held the group together long enough for a full-length release. Nearly incoherent lyrics from Pasyeur are carried along the Dick Dalean riffs of guitarist Sennott Burke like a surf should, evoking scenes from vintage surf movie soundtracks. But don’t categorize them with the beach-pop crowd yet — at most they could be compared to a shoegazing Surfer Blood or a peppy Beach House.

As we all know, it’s been a slow start to summer here in the Pacific Northwest, but it’s finally time for us to vacation. Beach Fossils will be performing at the Capitol Hill Block Party on Saturday afternoon. If you can’t make it, they’ll be plenty of opportunity to catch them rocking the West Coast and beyond for the rest of the summer. Check their MySpace page for details. Until then, have a little taste of their live show at Brooklyn’s Bruar Falls via The Tripwire:
