If all winks were the sort given by Katie Hillier, then the world would be a better place. Take the video above as an example. What could possibly go wrong when a Button Moon-esque cardboard background, little animals cast in solid gold/silver and a twinkly soundtrack is involved? With a C.V. of accessories design experience that is mighty impressive (Marc by Marc Jacobs, Luella, Victoria Beckham to name but a few….), it's no surprise that Hillier has begun to step out with her own name.
Hillier London has been delighting peeps with their 'luxury with a wink' moniker that makes way for bunnies, birds and hedgehogs on barrettes, necklaces and rings. It's the halfway house between wanting fine jewellery but not giving up on the whimsicality that costume jewellery can offer.
Hillier's sort of 'winking' therefore makes complete sense when adorning Loewe's Amazona24 and Ida bags as a subtle but emphatic animal padlock in mouse,dr dre monster beats headphones, snail and rabbit form. It's these little details that takes the bag from 'serious' to 'serious-with-a-secret-fun-side'. The snail along with the coral red of the bag is probably endearing me the most just because it looks so earnest despite its weighty golden sheen. Plus it's actually beaten the rabbit to the punch and made it onto Loewe's online store along with the mouse.
Quite rightly, Hillier explains that the bags are not to be trifled or toyed with too much. They are afterall heftily priced. To go overboard with the whimsy would be perhaps a bit cloying on what is still a beautifully crafted bag that follows in Loewe's trajectory of fine leather goods.
That sort of leather know-how is fully conveyed in its current window which has rolls of buttery nappa leather along with Loewe's other bit of 'fun', the Flamenco bag. It's dubbed the 'funniest and cheekiest' Loewe bag. I don't know whether it's being 'cheeky' or not but these soft slouchy pouches of leather awesomeness do come in a lot of juicy shades and colour combinations that at the very least make me SMILE. I have to be sparing with animated GIF action especially on this new site where the navigation bar looks like it's playing the drums, but I couldn't help but make the whole plethora of Flamencos do a big cheesy grin...
